Your brain health is equally as important as our physical health as we grow older – It’s true! But we often forget about all the different lifestyle factors that make a big impact on how we improve and preserve our brain health. As seniors, we need to really try to make it a top priority. We’re sharing our top factors below so you can keep your brain healthy and active as you age!
Get Good Sleep
Getting good sleep is a great basic factor to start with. High-quality rest is essential for our brains to feel rejuvenated and active the next day. It’s recommended for seniors to get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep every night.
Stay Active
Keeping yourself active each day can also work to keep our minds active. When we exercise regularly, even if it’s something as simple as going for a walk, we’re helping our bodies AND minds grow stronger. Exercise gets rid of feelings like anxiety while releasing good endorphins that make our brains happy!
Journal
Start writing! It might seem old-fashioned, but we suggest getting yourself a journal and writing out your thoughts, feelings, and frustrations. The act of physically writing these out is cathartic and can help you to relieve the stress of the day. Less stress, healthier brain!
Eat and Drink Healthy
It’s a great idea to be intentional about what you are using to power your body, especially as seniors. As we get older, we need more of the good things like Vitamin C – eat more oranges and peppers! Try to keep your body hydrated and make sure you’re drinking enough water every day. Additionally, a great change to make is lessening your caffeine intake. Try making a switch from coffee to tea!
Talk to Other People
A great way to stay social is to join a local organization or project! Keep yourself social and talking to others often. Having conversations and connecting with like-minded people regularly will work wonders for your brain!
